At the Thursday July 12th meeting of the Hickory Rotary Club, Missionary Jennifer Foster spoke to the club about her mission work in South America. As early as age eight, Jennifer felt called to perform missionary work with an unreached tribe. Twenty years later, she got the opportunity.
After three months of Portuguese language training, three months of jungle survival training, and a three day river trek, she made a new home in the Marajai Community in the Amazon jungle of Brazil. Her goal was to live in the Marajai community (among the tribe), evangelize, disciple and plant a self-sustaining church among them. She lived without electricity, slept in a hammock, bathed in the river, dined on turtle head and cared for her pet monkey, Nicco.
At the conclusion of her stay, the community had a Church congregation of over 60 people with two trained pastors (men of the tribe) who have continued the work that was started there. To this day, the Church continues to live out their salvation, share their faith, and meet as a congregation twice a week for services. Her two-year journey was one of intrigue, adventure and faith. She learned how to live out her true calling and passion in life.
While stateside, Jennifer travels the U.S. with Stand Out Ministries and encourages others to find their unique callings which God has placed on each life. Her message is simple: “Find your SHAPE for eternity sake and go make a difference which will last forever.”
