Local CPS-3 Team L to R: Jason Abernathy (Community Manager), Aliesha Hendrix (Mission Delivery Manager), Denise Goodwin-Hockaday (Regional Mission Delivery Director), Cheryl Burgess (CPS3 Community Champion) and Hani Nassar (CPS3 Community Champion)
At Thursday’s meeting of the Hickory Rotary Club, members between the ages of 30-65 were invited to participate in the nationwide Cancer Prevention Study–3. (CPS-3.) We all want to know we have made a difference in the life of another. This year our community has a unique opportunity to make an impact on the lives of many.
To better understand ways to prevent cancer, the American Cancer Society is recruiting 300,000 men and women across the US and Puerto Rico for this landmark study. Locally, the goal is to enroll 400 participants from Catawba and surrounding counties.
The third Cancer Prevention Study of the American Cancer Society will be enrolling participants at Frye Regional Medical Center, Catawba Valley Medical Center and Hickory Foundation YMCA November 13 and 15, 2012. As part of enrollment, individuals who choose to participate will simply fill out a short survey, provide a small blood sample (to be collected by trained phlebotomists) and provide a waist measurement. At home, a comprehensive baseline survey can be completed on-line or mailed. Enrollment will take approximately 20-30 minutes at your local event. From that point forward, study participants will be followed over time to update information via periodic, mailed surveys. Your involvement in CPS-3 will help American Cancer Society researchers understand the causes of, and ultimately determine ways to prevent cancer.
If you are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study (which involves completing follow-up surveys every couple of years over the next 20-30 years), are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old and have never been diagnosed with cancer, then you will want to participate in this study.
If you don’t meet the eligibility requirements, your significant participation comes from telling everyone you know about the opportunity to help prevent cancer.
Local enrollment will take place on November 13, at the Health First Center at Catawba Valley Mall from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Frye Regional Medical Center at the Heart Tower Lobby from 1 to 5 p.m. and on November 15 at the Hickory Foundation YMCA from 7 to 11 a.m. and Catawba Valley Medical Center (Jade Room) from 3 to 7 p.m.
If you would like an ACS Community Champion to make a presentation at your place of business before November 13, 2012, please contact Hani Nassar via e-mail hmnassar@gmail.com or by phone at 828-234-6330 with your request.
