The Rotary Foundation (TRF)

Goals:

  • Increase awareness and educate club members about the work of TRF throughout the world.
  • Require that our committee chairman attend the District TRF seminar to obtain up-to-date information and to network with other club leaders.
  • Establish a general giving goal of $15,000 and promote contributions to TRF, especially through Paul Harris Fellow and Paul Harris Sustaining Member recognition. A goal of 20 new Paul Harris Sustaining members has been set.
  • Encourage club members to support TRF's Endowment Fund by becoming Benefactors. The goal is to enroll 10 new benefactors for this program.

Plans:

  • Provide the editor of The Spoke facts and figures about TRF, through a weekly column entitled "Rotary Foundation Corner."
  • Schedule activities for the month of November (Rotary Foundation Month).
  • Target certain club members who are not now participating in TRF.
  • Recognize our Paul Harris Fellows at meetings. This includes our continuing program of recognizing some non-Rotarians and Past Presidents.

The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational and cultural exchange programs.

TRF’s Humanitarian Programs fund international Rotary club and district projects designed to improve the quality of life. Providing health care, clean water, food, education and housing are a few of the basic goals that these projects work toward -- primarily in the developing world.

Through its Educational Programs TRF provides funding for about 1200 students to study abroad each year. In all cases, recipients are expected to act as ambassadors of goodwill, furthering international understanding and promoting friendly relations between their host and sponsoring countries.

TRF is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of TRF who share its vision of a better world.

TRF was conceived as an endowment fund in 1917 by Rotary’s sixth president, Arch C. Klumph, “for the purpose of doing good in the world.”

A donation of $1,000 can be made in the name of any Rotarian or non-Rotarian and that person is then designated a Paul Harris Fellow and receives the appropriate recognition with a medallion, lapel pin and certificate. A donation of $50 every six months for a period of ten years can also be made in order to achieve this honor. A member participating in this manner is called a Paul Harris Sustaining Member.

Another method of participation is by becoming a Benefactor. Here $1,000 is pledged-upon one’s death-to TRF Permanent Fund and can be accomplished by a will or codicil, insurance or other ways.

Of the forty Rotary Clubs that comprise District 7670, Hickory Rotary Club has consistently been ranked first in most of the meaningful categories of The Rotary Foundation.

As of September 1, 1998, Hickory Rotary Club has 156 Paul Harris Fellows, 114 Paul Harris Sustaining Members and 24 Benefactors. Its all-time giving amounts to $179,364.50. These figures are a direct reflection of how the individual Rotarians in our club believe in and support The Rotary Foundation.
